What is Disablement Cover?

Disablement Cover is there to offer you financial support, in the form of a lump sum payout, if you become disabled due to an illness or injury. Unlike our Dread Disease Cover, it covers more than just serious illnesses and helps you have the financial support to get your life back on track after becoming disabled.

1st for Women Disablement Cover

At 1st for Women, we offer two types of Disablement Cover by 1Life: occupation-based Disablement Insurance and Event-Based Disablement Insurance. Both of these are standalone products, so if you claim from them, it won’t affect any other 1st for Women Life Insurance policies you already have.

 

  • Occupation-Based Disablement Insurance: With this type of insurance, you’re covered immediately for disablement – no waiting periods. If you become permanently disabled and can no longer work, you’ll get the full cover amount paid out to you.

  • Event-Based Disablement Insurance: With this type of cover, you’re covered immediately for accidental disablement, and depending on the type of disability you suffer, we’ll pay out a portion of your cover amount.

Disablement Cover benefits 

We know you’re busy, so we’ve made it easy to take out our Disablement Insurance. All it requires is an HIV test – no lengthy medical check-ups needed.  

We won’t increase the premiums on your policy for the first two years, and because you can’t predict what might happen tomorrow, there are no waiting periods for disablement that occurs because of an accident or an illness. You’re covered the moment your policy becomes valid. 

We understand the financial burden sudden disablement places on a family. If you have 1st for Women Life Insurance and Dread Disease Cover policies, we’ll cover the cost of the monthly premiums on these for a certain period of time if you become disabled and your Disablement Insurance policy pays out a lump sum.  

You also have the option to increase your cover amount if your circumstances change, such as if you get married or have a child, and you need more money to ensure you and your family will be adequately looked after financially. 

Why do I need Disablement Cover?

Life is unpredictable and the best we can do is be prepared for the worst. Disablement Cover is there to make sure that you can keep up your standard of living should you become disabled.

The funds received from the cover can be used to:

  • Replace all or some of your income if you are unable to work – which is likely the case when becoming disabled.

  • Remodel your home to cater for your disability – from wheelchair-accessible ramps to bathroom renovations, your new lifestyle will require some changes in your house.

How is my premium calculated?

Because each woman is unique, your Disablement Cover premium will be based on your individual risk profile. We take factors like your age, gender, occupation, and health into consideration when calculating your monthly premium.

When will a policy payout?

Your Disablement Cover will payout in the event that you, the assured, become disabled, depending on the type and amount of cover bought.

Occupation-based Disablement Insurance will pay out your cover in full if you are permanently disabled and unable to work – either at your current job or any other work in line with your skills, knowledge and experience.

Event-based Disablement Insurance will pay out a portion of your cover, depending on your disability. While you may still be able to work with your disability, we understand that you’ll still need some additional financial assistance to get through the change in your life. You may need to take a few months off work to adjust to your disability or extra funds to help customise your house and car.

When would a claim be rejected?

A claim on your 1st for Women Disablement Cover will be rejected in the event of:

  • Self-inflicted injury or illness.

  • Failure to obtain and/or follow reasonable medical advice.

  • Disablement as a result of a hazardous pursuit, like participation in acts of war, civil commotion, riot or acts of terrorism.

  • Disablement as a result of alcohol or drug abuse.

  • Participation in criminal activity or any hazardous sport.

  • Disablement while breaking any law.

What is the Disablement Premium Waiver?

If you become disabled and the full cover amount of your disablement benefit is paid out, this benefit pays the premiums of your 1st for Women Basic, 1st for Women Elevated, and 1st for Women Dread Disease Cover, for a period of up to five years.
