What does Third Party Insurance do?
In a nutshell, your third party car insurance policy will not cover your car.
If you back out of your driveway and happen to scrape the side of your vehicle on your exit- you will not be covered. If you come back from an afternoon’s well deserved shopping spree only to find that some inconsiderate trolley-pusher has just had an altercation with your baby’s bumper- you will not be covered.
But, should you find your car parked inside another car after overestimating the power of your breaks and underestimating the speed at which you were travelling; your third party car insurance policy will settle the expenses, costs and damages incurred by the other driver, on your behalf.
Third party insurance protects you against paying for any damage or injury that you cause that you are legally responsible for.
What sort of vehicle should I get Third Party Car Insurance for?
Let’s just put it this way- your latest, brand new, just driven off the shop floor luxury vehicle probably needs slightly more care.
But if your little jalopy has a few more years on the clock, looks a little worse for wear and probably costs the same to repair as to replace, your monthly premiums will be significantly lower with a third party insurance policy than they would be with a more comprehensive policy.
What will my third party insurance policy include?
Unfortunately you will not get towing and storage included in your third party only insurance policy. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that your third party insurance will cover the medical expenses of anyone involved in an accident up to R500.
The sound system in your vehicle can be insured along with your policy, but you’ll have to specify that you want it insured in order for your third party insurance policy to cover it.
