What does Comprehensive Insurance do?

Comprehensive vehicle insurance is exactly that- comprehensive. The majority of all vehicle related insurance claims are own-damage related. That means, you guessed it, damage to your own car that you yourself caused.

Remember that pesky pole that took off your side mirror? Or the automatic gate that closed while you were midway into a friend’s driveway? Or even that pillar next to your car at the gym that leapt out at the last minute and tore your bumper off? That’s own-damage, no matter how convinced you are that that pillar has a mind of its own.

What perils does Comprehensive Insurance cover?

Your comprehensive insurance policy also obviously protects you against more common perils than just pesky poles and unpredictable pillars.

With comprehensive insurance, your car is covered against theft of the vehicle and vehicle break-ins. You will also be indemnified for your own damage and the damage, costs and expenses of any third party in the event of an accident that you caused.

What else is included with a Comprehensive Insurance policy?

Included with your comprehensive insurance policy, you’ll get medical costs up to R500 covered in the event of an accident. Your vehicles canopy and its sound system are also covered against theft and damage provided that you insurance schedule states that you are paying for cover.

You can also opt to have hail damage cover included in your comprehensive insurance policy as well as a rental car if your car is damaged in an accident or stolen.

Do I still have to pay an excess if I have Comprehensive Insurance?

An excess is the first amount payable on any claim. The amount of excess you pay when you claim depends on the nature of the claim and the kind of cover you have opted for. You can reduce the amount of excess you have to pay when claiming by paying a slightly higher premium every month.
